Having searched all over for accurate details of the above, can anyone help with a definitive answer to the following for a 1944 UK based 'N';

Recommended engine oil grade, which I would assume to be a straight, non detergent type?

Recommended gearbox/axle oil, 90/140 gear oil, straight or EP?

I am sure the above question has been asked many times before but as a new owner of an unrestored 'N'I cant find it yet!

Hi Mike,
I too have a model N. For engine oil you should use a low detergent SAE40 oil and allow the engine to warm before applying too many revs. Do NOT use multigrades, yes the quality of them is good but they are not suitable for engines such as ours and apart from anything else will cause sludging up over a long period. As far as gearbox oil is concerned us SAE140 or put in SAE90 if you use the tractor during the winter. It is very important though to make sure the oil is compatible with phosphor bronze. If it isn't it will rapidly rot away your worm drive gear! I use 'ROCK' oils and they're vgood.

Can any of you guys please tell me where I can get a colour photo of a 1944 Fordson model N. My brother in law who lives in Hamilton Canada is desperate to get a copy as this was the first tractor his father owned

if the crankcase is reletivly clean use a 15w-40 detergent oil and GL5 80-90 or GL5 85-140 for the transmission
