My '27 F needs a new commutator [I believe] as it has intermittent buzzing of the coils when starting. Must be worn down?? I also have a rattling sound coming from front of motor when running. An old-timer told me it was the cam gear worn. Anybody know where I can get parts. Am I on the right track? Was thinking about tearing into the front of the motor to see what I could find.Any body got any input?? Thanks if you do!!

Take the commutator cap off and look closely at it. Check also the roller and make sure the small spring is there to hold it against the cap contact area. The insulating material between the contact points in the cap on my '23 model F was worn into a wavy surface from the roller bouncing inside the cap. Since there was material left even at the low spots, I put the cap in a lathe and 'bored' the contact area round. It seemed to help at higher speed but didn't affect idling. That got better when I set the point gap on #1 cylinder while the engine was running instead of fixing it at 1/32" suggested in the manual.

The timing cover area of my tractor makes some noise too. It sounds like gear noise and is probably much like what you hear. If you are looking for parts, search this site for "Fordson Parts" You should find previous posts with addresses and phone numbers. Two places come to mind. One is the Fordson House in Escanaba, Mich. and the other is Rosewood Machine and Tool in Rosewood, Ohio.
