'54 major diesel is leaking coolant at the through the block governor rod. big trouble??

Unfortunatly it sounds like you have a cracked block, on the inside. I was looking for another block to replace one in my '54 FMD. The one I found first ended up being cracked inside just like this. The cross rod was frozen because water had entered through the crack. The crossrod is captive in the casting and is not supposed to be in contact with the coolant. Also when the boss for the crossrod is cracked it is usualy an indicator that the mainjournal is cracked also. You will need a new block unless, the mains are still intact. You could possibly send the block you have to a machineshop and have a sleeve put in the block to reseal the boss inside.
