Does anyone know the correct outside diameter of the crankshaft pulley hub for a 1963 FSM. I am trying to replace the front seal and both seals that I have recieved from two different suppliers have an eyeballed space of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch between the seal and the hub.

In the event that this hub is worn that far, has anyone had experience in having this built up and reground to spec, or know of a source for getting a replacement??

Thanks,

Mark Do not dispair there are several ways to attack an solve this problem.First, get accurate measurements of the O D you need and also shaft diameter and thickness of old seal.Visit or call your local bearing supply house and explain your problem and needs. If you do not have one, Call Houston Bearing Co.Hou,Tx. There are Thousands of seal sizes. If the hub is grooved there are 3 things you can do.Set the new seal in farther or out farther to miss the groove.Ask for a thinner or thicker seal, which will put the lip in a different spot. Machine the shaft to a smaller diameter to fit a standard available seal or inquire about a device known as a SPEEDY SLEEVE.Probably expensive. Build up and machine back , more expensive.I have these jobs to cope with almost weekly. Not really a bigg deal.If you still hhave a problem ,e-mail me .I will answer or phone you for more direct help.good luck. j John Cooney ,Hou.Tx.

It has been a while since I have seen one of those hubs that you have described but if it has been worn down by a seal, it won't be an even diameter and probably will have a groove in it the same dimension as the seal contact width. It is also unlikely that an old worn out seal would continue to wear the metal down that much smaller than a new seal. It may be that you don't have the correct seal yet.

That is why I am looking for the specs on that hub so I can see where I am off. I bought this tractor with lots of evidence of a front seal leak, so it is entirely possible that the hub has been replaced at some time with the wrong part number. It almost seems like the hub is from an earlier engine with the smaller diameter hub. My I&T indicates that I should have a 2.625 diameter, but I was hoping that someone could confirm this. Once I have it confirmed, then I can get the hub mic'd and determine if I need to see if I can find/order the correct one or have this one welded and machined to the correct measurements.

Ah well....these are the joys of the antique tractor enthusists...right?? This really is fun....Right?? Right??

:)

You are right on target Mark! I have a couple of disassembled engines, one is early 50's and one is late 50's. The early one has the larger diameter belt pulley for the wide fan belt and the later has the smaller diameter belt pulley for the narrow fan belt. I measured the diameter of the seal surface with a caliper and the early one is about 2.500 and the later is 2.625! The crank dia is the same on both.
You are right about how fun this can be sometimes!
