I've read all the old posts on batteries, 138 amp-hours, two-6V batteries in series, etc. Does anyone have any new information? The battery tray in my 64 super major will accept a battery 13.75" L x 10" W x 9" H. I can't find a battery that size that will produce 138 AH. By the way, all the battery manf. I've seen around here (SE USA)rate batteries in CCA and Reserve Capacity. As best as I can tell RC is the number of minutes a battery will produce 25 amps. So to convert this to amp-hours, you divide RC in minutes by 60 to get hours, then multiply by 25 to get amp-hours. This would mean that you need RC=330 to get 138 amp-hours. Is this right? Help please from someone who knows more than me!

Thanks,

Mark

I believe your calculation is correct. My policy is to use the highest capacity battery or batteries I can find and afford that will fit. To get 12V and 138AH you can use two 6V at 138AH in series or two 12V at 69AH in parallel. Both series and parallel batteries have been used by many manufacturers for many years and both are equally satisfactory. Fordson has used series batteries. Parallel connection is a little harder to physically connect it seems. It seems easier and cheaper to use parallel batteries since 6V batteries seem more expensive for the same total capacity.

Thanks for the reply, Don.I'm having trouble finding a battery (or two) with sufficient AH that will fit in the compartment (13.75" X 10" x about 9" high). Does anyone know a supplier or a size that I can look for?

Ending up using a Group 31 12v battery, 1000 CCA and 200 RC. This fit the tray well. Seems to crank it just fine. Probably won't have much trouble in the Winter either. I don't get too cold here in Georgia.

Thanks,

Mark
