If I just turn lights on - how much discharge should my ammeter show, cos the needle only moves a little bit
Im thinking that maybe the ammeter is broken or the voltage regulator is at fault, or possible dirty connections,
Is the induction based one, does it matter if the metal bit the wire from the control box flows through to induce the magnetic field is rusty??
Anyone got any ideas
Cheers

I don't think it matters if the metal loop is a little rusty as long as most of the metal is still there. If you were to loop the wire through the bit several times, you should see an increased reading equal to the number of loops times the orignial reading- that might help troubleshoot a mechanically stuck needle.

If you have the lights on without the engine running, I would expect a reading of a few amps.

I am not quite sure what you mean in your mail. Are you saying that the connection from the regulator to the field terminal on the generator is rusted through/ broken? If so, you will not get any significant output from the generator until you ensure a good connection.

It would be a good idea to clean all the regulator/ generator terminals and apply a bit of vaseline in any case.

If you've got a DC voltage meter you can read how much your tractor is charging and how much the drain is when you turn on your lights. 13 to 14 volts is what you want going to your battery. It shouldn't drop much when you turn your lights on. Take care.
