I have a 1963 FSM with a Ford loader and backhoe. It's in decent working order, but smokes very badly. I have the owner's manual for the tractor (and the loader and backhoe as well), but they don't have enough troubleshooting detail to help me out. Any ideas what the problem might be? The tractor has decent power and isn't leaking any fluids, but it produces enough black smoke (even at an idle and warmed up) to kill every mosquito within a hundred yards. I suspect injectors and/or a mistimed injector pump, but I don't know where to find a good source of parts. Any help would be appreciated.

The injector pump is worked by vacume. there is a diaphram at the front of the pump if this has got a hole in it or gone pappy .This will make it black smoke at any engine speed.I had this problem. There is also a breather onthe top of the pump a little cap with two locking nuts make sure they ara not tighted down to much .

If the diaphragm has gone on the neumatic governor then the engine will race away and just get faster and faster until it literally blows up (unless u pull the stop cord)

Tim, As a general rule;- black smoke = fuel white smoke = water blue smoke = oil.
I would remove your injectors and have them serviced by your local fuel injection specialist - I think you'll find that will solve your problem. Don't touch the fuel pump at this stage.
Peter.

Any industrial diesel rebuild injection pump shop should be able to help with injectors and simms parts. They can test and possibly rebuild your injectors. Have you tried cutting off the fuel to one injector at a time.

No I haven't--I wasn't aware that I could cut off the fuel to the individual injectors on this engine. If I can, what's the best way to go about it without damaging anything?

Where the line of the injector goes into the head.
Crack open(unscrew) the line while the engine is running. This will cause the diesel meant for the injector to leak out of the line. The fuel will be cut off from that cylinder. Note if there is any change in your engines smoking. Do this one at a time for each cylinder.

General cause of black smoke:
1.dirty air cleaner,faulty injectors,worn delivery valves.
2.Maximum stop screw out of adjustment
3. excess fuel device in.
