Dexta engine runs unevenly

The engine in my '59 diesel dexta won't run smoothly (pneumatic governer).

Starting from cold, the engine 'hunts' around the rpm demanded on the throttle. In other words, the rpm rises and falls over a period of about four seconds, then repeats the cycle. When the engine is warm, it is less noticable, but still present.

The exhaust smokes a bit but the engine doesn't blow too heavily through the breather pipe. We have cleaned/ replaced all the filters and the diaphram in the governer is in good condition.

Any ideas what could be the cause?

On the side of the Governor is a plug with a gauze type filter in it,did you clean that? Also,if the idle speed is set too low,it tends to do that sort of thing.

Yes, we cleaned the gauze filter. The problem is more apparent at low rpm, but even at high rpm it is still present.

Any other thoughts?

Dave one other small thing- did you clean and make sure the butterfly in the intake is loose and moving without binding. It only takes a small amount of friction on the butterfly for it throw off the governor, or perhaps a small pinhole in the line to the pump from the manifold.

Thanks,

We did clean the butterfly valve, so all the connections have been disturbed. I will give it and the connecting pipe a check.
