Major Diesel ID?

A neighbor just came into a Major Diesel. I printed the thread below for him, hoping we could identify it. No ser. no. on the bell housing and none we can find on the engine. We did find a pad on the right side of the engine at the front, above and just forward of the injector pump (same place as Farmall put the pad for their engine #s), but it was blank, never was anything there. Two questions, then. Is that the right place to look for the pad? Did Fordson sell replacement blocks without serial numbers? Any help dating this machine is welcome. Thanks from Chuck and me.

You are right. That blank space should have the serial number. Since it is blank, it could be a replacement block. Another place to look is at the back of the engine on the wall separating the engine from the battery compartment. There should be a serial number tag for that tractor.
