Hi, Id really like to modify something on my major engine that will give it more power. Ive just had the injectors serviced (they were completely knackered, they had the Caps replaced aswell as the nozzles) and Ive gotta reassemble the head as i did all the valves, so the engine should be in pretty good shape when I finish. I was just wondering if I could modify it for more power. Any suggestions would be great.

Factory parts that will lift power are the later cylinder head with in line ports, this is a must. The later camshafts, Power Major onwrards and the large bore injector pump.

Not worth the hassle, if you want more power fit the engine out of a later tractor, but you will be dissapointed as HP is not what gives you pulling power, its torque.

If you want real power, fit a 590E Thames Trader 330 CID six cylinder engine, that will give about 90hp at 2000 rpm and 1000 at 2400. They are a bolt in swap.

I was looking through the archives for info on a Fordson Major engine swap when I found the post from Steven B from 2002. Probably a cold trail, but I was wondering if anyone has any information about a 4 or 6 cylinder diesel engine swap for the Fordson Major Diesel with an engine available here in the states. I have never seen a "Thames Trader" in Pennsylvania, at least not to my knowledge!
Thanks.

Hey Paddy,
If you're serious about jacking your power up you could go with a supercharger or turbocharger, either one would work and should run only about 5-6 grand. Good luck.

Mike, short of the a for mentioned turbo/ supper charge route, your choices are increase fuel delivery rate ie turn up the pump, and increase engine rpms. Now you don't want to get carried away with eather one, to much fuel, you'll burn a piston. To many rpms well you'll end up with a piston sittin on the seat next to ya ( grin). With both you probably lookin at no more than a 2-5 hp gain, that a the cost of more fuel, so you might just want to leave well enough alone, what ever your pleasure, good luck & be safe best regaurds big John

Hi John,
Were it my Fordson Major I'd leave it alone, if I wanted more power I'd go get a different tractor, but Paddy wanted to know how to get more from a poor old tired machine, he didn't ask for longevity, economy or durability, just more power.
