I was wondering how much oil is suppose to be in the injection pump of my 54 major.I can't find any info in my manual and don't see any place to ad or drain it. I poored some oil in the side with the cover off.

Also the oil pressure is reading about 10psi and was wondering if theses gages had problem seems to be good oil supply. Using 30 weight.

This tractor starts in 2 seconds and runs great It sat for yrs before I got it on the 3rd oil change and pulled the plate off the bottom of the pan to clean out junk.

The injector pump has a very small of oil, I think about half a pint (UK), poured in through the side, with the cover removed, when the pump is built. After this the pump relies on the diesel leakage from the injectors for lubrication. There should be an over flow pipe on the bottom right hand side of the pump as you look at and this will maintain the level.

My FSM fitted with a simialr pump to yours began to squeek after being stood during restoration, I added some oil through the level pipe hole as a roadside fix and it seemed to do the trick.

The Majors with the simms injection pump are lubricated by the diesel fuel. From 58 on,the Super majors got the minimec pump, which is lubricated with oil (w30 or similar).

Tom,

My Super is an early model with orange wheels etc. these models were fitted with a pneumatic govenor Simms pump. I am in the UK, I do not know what pumps were fitted to foreign tractors.

The small amount of oil which I mentioned is used when these pumps are first assembled or after a long period with out use etc when the diesel has evaporated away, according to the workshop manual.

Hope this helps,

Simon

10 PSI is a little low, i get between 35 - 40 from cold on my 56 Major. As far as I know the Gauges dont suffer from any problems, I fitted all mine up cos there was only the gauge, i had to get all the tubing and the adapter that comes out the block. U could try blowing the oil tibe out with an air line, other than that its your oil pump thats on its way out.
My pressure drops down when it idles to around 15 or 20, but when u bring the revs up it rises again.

Hope this is all of some help

I believe those early majors with the pneumatic governors on the injectionpump don't need any oil in the pump,it's lubricated by the fuel.i'm pretty darn sure!
