I have a Fordson model N which is petrol/TVO. Would it be kinder to the engine to run it on straight petrol or should I still use TVO once it has warmed up? Does TVO have any advantages other than being cheaper (in England)?

Roland, TVO was introduced after the last war as a cheap fuel and has no particular advantages over petrol. Having said that, it gives a beautiful exhaust smell, particularly when combined with new mowed hay. I would ensure that if you constantly run on petrol only you use either LRP petrol, or use unleaded with an additive - your valve seats may be damaged after a while running on unleaded.

As TVO is no longer available in the UK as such, and modern, straight kerosene aka paraffin aka 28 second heating oil is too dry for engine use on its own, my local fuel supplier and tractor nut suggested 75% paraffin, 15% petrol and 10% diesel (although this got translated roughly into 8:2:1 gallons because I still work in old measures). I run my E1ADKN on this and it seems OK. Brian (famous on this board for good advice) runs his on a 50:50 mix of petrol and diesel, I believe - in fact I think he starts it on this as well.
