Broken shut off cable on Super Dexta

My first major problem has arisen with my 1963 Super Dexta. I had just backed into the barn this afternoon, cut back the throttle, and pulled the knob out of the dash to shut the diesel engine down.

Unfortunately, when I say pulled the knob out, that is just what happened. Whereas it usually stops at its limit, this time the knob and about three inches of rod came right out in my hand. The tractor shut down okay, and lokking at it I will be able to make it run and stop in an emergency, but I will have to get off to shut it down.

Does anyone here have any tips or experience to share regarding installing a "new" piece, or even where a replacement might be had? I am supposing that I might be able to find a "generic" part that would work, but if I can find an original, or at least an original looking part, I'd prefer that. I am located in eastern PA if that means anything.

Thanks.

Bill

Don,

My solution was to use a bicycle brake cable (casing and inner). I reused the existing stop knob by cutting off the broken cable where it entered the 3" steel rod. I then drilled into the end of the rod. After careful cleaning, silver brazing alloy was used to attach the new cable in the hole. A new piece of casing looked a treat. (still in service 4 years later)
(245 grade silver brazing alloy, the one with 45% silver and a little cadmium (NOT the 5% plumbing stuff) works well on steel and can be used with a propane torch .. small one for this size).

All the best.

Hi Bill:
I had the same problem with my '62 SD. I had to go the good old Napa route and buy a manual choke cable assy and I was able to adapt it and make it work. To give it a little more class I took the knob off and tapped and threaded a Stainless cabinet pull on to the stem. Looks really good. The cost was right. I've never seen an OEM for that particular part. Good Luck Don

Hi Don

I don't know that it is OEM, but I got a cable at a local (HAH! - 50 miles away) Ford tractor dealer. It looks exactly like the one on the tractor except the knob is red instead of black plastic, and the face of it has a picture of a fuel pump with a circle and a line through it. The old one must have been too complicated. It has words that say "Pull to stop fuel". ;-)

We'll see how easy it goes on. Until I get it on, I told my wife she just has to run alongside the tractor while I run it in case I need to stop on a hill. That didn't go over too well.

Bill, Here in the UK I've had similar problems with both tacho and stop cables. I've always been able to get replacements from instrument makers - people who service/supply speedos, tractormeters, etc.(check yellow pages). If you have a problem getting one made locally let me know and I'll see if I can get you one here.
Regards,
Peter.
