I have recently bought a model N and would like to know which no. to refer to when dating it. I'd like to get it plated.I have scant knowledge of these tractors so any help would be much appreciated. Is there a good club I can join?

Roland,
You should find the serial number stamped on the right hand end of the machined manifold port surface.6 digits
If you can't find them there then check around the engine to gearbox joining flange (engine side near the belt pulley.
I think you'll need to look up the numbers elsewhere on the net to date it. The ones at this site use to be only for model F and American Ford tractors. It sounds like English built Fordsons are collectable in the US?

Regards
Andrew

English built Fordsons are not very popular in the states, they collect the F. There are lots of them in Canada though

Hello Roland,

Sorry, I guess after a while I just assume that most people on this forum are from US! It's good to see it's really a worldwide thing.

I've got about 5 Fordsons (only a few compared to others I know of!!). A 1926 F, 1935 N bitsa, 1938 N (Blue), 1938 N (orange) and a 1951 E27N. I've tinkered with them mostly. The 1935 model was made out of two tractors by an old bloke and I had two fix the gearbox on this one. He had mixed up two sets of gears so I had to sort this out. It's kind of a "Cork look-a-like" From my limited experiences and what I hear it seems that the biggest problem people have is with the clutch. After sitting idle for a long time the plates in the clutch "flatten out" and are slow to release and this causes problems when you are trying to find a gear! One of mine is like this. I'll have to get around to fix it one day! At the moment I'm patient. I let it sit and warm the oil up for 10-15 minutes and this aleviates the problem for the time being.
Other than this they are pretty straight forward. Have a flick through an old manual. There's not much to them. As with any old tractors don't forget to retard the spark when you start it. (Keep you thumb next to your index finger when you hold the crank handle and only crank upwards - just to be safe!)
Have you dated it? I used to remember where a good site for this was!I've got a book list here somewhere if want.
Let us know how you get on.
Regards
Andrew

Thanks for the advice Andrew. I have dated mine, it's a 1942(dark green)and am now in the process of registering it for the road.It runs very well but I think the mag needs overhauling.I'm off to a big show this weekend to buy some spares for it so I'll let you know of any useful contacts. Regards Roland
