E27N Locked up

G'day folks.
The other week I spied a great oportunity to get into an Old Tractor project in the way of a early 50's E27N sitting beside a shed up on the back-blocks. On investigation the old-girl was faily promising. It turned over, has compresion, has spark, oil and water in the right places and no major rust or dings. And the nice lady sold it to me for Aus$300 (which is about the price of a large good cold beer in USA dollars). Come the time to tow the little critter onto a truck the thing would not budge. The thing was in neutral, the brake drum was off but the hand brake seemed to have remained on, even after I had released the lever. We pulled and pulled hooping to free it up but this Fordson was staying well and truely put!

I was hoping that someone out there may give us a hint to getting this thing freed up easily. (The lady is starting to think that her old tractor is wanting to stay in her garden....) and I dont want to go pulling to much off it while it is her yard.

Hi,I've loaded up 3 E27N's in the last 6 years & 2 had this problem It's usually the brake drum rusted to the brake shoes. You have to remove the cover a someone els said. Then remove brake drum which will take 2bars and a hammer ply the drum on either side and hit the centre of drum or all around with hammer its hard to get off but it will come off.If that wheel does'nt come fre after the drum is of then pull the tractor back & forward this should free it.

Thanks for the thoughts Andrew. Im in the Orange area of NSW. This unit has 3 point linkage, I also removed the brake drum from the left hand side to find that the left side brakes were not locked on. There is a cover on the right hand side where I would expect the brake drum to be under (which is soaking in WD40). This appears to be removed with 3 screws. It also has a small inspection cover(?) held with a wing nut. Should there be a similar cover over the brake drum on the left?
After releasing the transmission brake (finally; it was pulled on and the release mechanism was jammed), the lever did not seem to activate anything inside, it was free to move back without any resistance. How does this brake mechanism work? Could this be rusted or bound up? It seems unlikely because the trans' is full of oil. (& yes, the seals are leaking!).
In the dark of the evening after trying to move this thing, it felt like I was getting some movement from the left wheel but not from the right.... (maybe it is the drum brake?). If it was the transmission brake locked, is it right to think that I wouldnt get any movement from either wheel? I checked the in-gear thing by selecting neutral position and engadging the belt-pully and turning it. The moter turned until I selected a gear.
So many questions from such a simple thing, Regards Dean.

my uncle has 5 27N`s
3 blue, 1 green
and a half track
bout your problem, your not supposed to tow or push fordsons, as they are worm drive, and this can break.
if you have any info or no some one who does on my uncles half track, i would be most gratfull,
hope all goes well.

E27N's are not worm drive so they can be towed
if need be.

Hello, Where abouts in Aust are you?

Things to check would be whether the thing is stuck in gear (or two! I've had a W6 and Farmall A stuck like this- kids forced the gearshifts)

The brake drums each side. They have covers that come off easily so you can see what's happening. Rust sometimes locks things up in old tractors.(Though I think majors are notorious for oil leaks at the seals which adversely affects the brakes!!)They are controlled from the left hand footpedal with a pawl catch on the foot plate. I guess the cables could be rusted tight not allowing them to release.

The tranmission brake (the right hand side lever). I don't think this would be a problem. They usually seem to wear so that they don't work without extreme application!! There is a plate on top of the gearbox that you can look through. (If it doesn't have 3pt linkage.)
It's hard to know what to suggest without seeing it and what happens when you try to tow it.

Good luck!
Let me know how you go with it.
PS I bought mine for AU$100. My mates were annoyed!! The luck of the draw!

Regards
Andrew
