I have a Fordson Super Dexta, year 1963, and the only way I can get it started is by using ether. If I try to start it normaly, I use all the curent. I have tried to put on another and stronger battery, but it does not help. It seems like the tractor is to week. I got the cold starter fixed last year, but it did not help.

Soren,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have already used ether on the Dexta, I would take a compression reading on it. I'll bet a dollar against a donut hole you have at least a cracked piston. The Perkins won't tolerate any ether at all.
The ether makes it crack out the compression ring groove. I really hope it hasn't but I would check the compression quick.

Soren,
Oscar has given very good advise. Do not use ether especially if you are using the heater!!! Could end up on the moon :) If you heat for 20 secs then press plunger on fuel tap, you should hear a "pop" as the fuel ignites in the manifold. Also if you have a minimec pump there is a small rod sticking out of the stop cable piviot where it enters the pump. This is also a cold start aid.
Open the throttle about half way and push this in. If when the engine is running this does not fly out automatically you will just have to give it a slight pull. When the engine is running, how much fume comes out of the engine breather. If lots piston rings are worn or stuck.
Regards

Brian

Don't use ether all the time, it'll only make matters worse.

ELECTRICITY - Check:
-plenty of power (12V battery, 100AH minimal)?
-the 3 cables to and from the starter motor - are they secure? No broken wires or loose bolts? No parts that glow up when starting?
-any short-circuits (causing a loss of current)?
-the starter motor itself (take it to a pro unless you're familiar with electric motors)

FUEL - Check:
-fuel tank clean? No rust inside? No rubble?
-fuel lines open, without any trapped air? Check this by loosening the small bolt on top of the fuel filter and working the manual fuel pump. Fuel should run out of the filter without air or dirt. Tighten the bolt, and repeat this procedure with the little bolt on the side of the injection pump.
-have the injector pump worked on if there's fuel leaking from the little pipe that runs down from the pump.
-have the injectors themselves checked and tuned.

AIR - Check:
-if the airfilter is filled with clean oil
-if the mesh metal filter is clean
-if there's anything blocking the air supply

MECHANICAL - Check:
-if the engine is properly 'timed' (meaning that the positions of the pistons, the crackshaft, the valves, the distribution network and the injection pump should be properly aligned; this is a common problem that can easily be solved)
-if the valves are properly tuned to specs
-if there's enough oil in the engine (of the correct grade).
