I need to repalce the head gasket on my Fordson Power major. I have one problem. I don't have a manual. Can anybody tell me if this would be a straight forward proceedure or are there any little tricks, or problems involved, that I would need to know.
Thanks for your help.
Happy easter.

I have a 56 FMD, and im replacing the headgasket at the mo. Basically all you need to know is the order to undo and do up the cylinderhead bolts and what torque setting to do them up to (85lb). When you take it apart, check the head isn't warped by laying a machined edge along it and checking with a 4 or 5 thou feeler gauge, if it goes thru, it needs planing.

Decoke the whole thing, be careful not to scratch the rings on the underneath of the cylinderhead as this will cause another leak. I used a paint scraper very carefully for the underneath, and a drill with a wire brush to do the valve ports and inlet and exhaust ports.

Wash the whole thing thru with parrafin, then petrol, make sure the valve guides are perfectly clean, and keep em oiled, otherwise they#ll go rusty, keep the push rods oiled, the bores oiled and the valves oiled t stop them rusting.

When you decoke the block, block up all the oil holes and the push rod holes with paper, and block up the bores and carefully remove the carbon from the top of the bores. If any goes inside the bore, wipe it out carefully with rag or paper. Also, get any carbon from between pistion and bore with thin bit of wood with grease on it.

Reasemble, with lots of care, don't do anything up too tight, and if you worrk aobut doing something wrong, STOP.

Basically, never scratch anything when it comes to headgaskets, be very careful and take your time.

Good luck

Paddy

Haven't had to do it, but the I&T manual seems to indicate that it is a fairly straight forward job. You might want to remove the injectors first, as they extend below the bottom head surface and might get damaged. There are apparently 3 different head gaskets used so be careful there. I have the I&T repair manual and the Ford parts manual so maybe I can be of more help as you get into it.
