I have a few questions on the Ford/ Fordson Super Majors.

I have seen a number of pictures with the headlamps in the grille. I have seen an original Ford brochure for the New Fordson Super Major (dated 1/1960) in which the headlamps are in the grille. I have seen pictures of purported 1963 Models with the headlamps in th grille.

The one I own was bult in November 1961. It was originally sold in the US in July or August of 1962.

It still has much of it's original paint, which as you can see from the picture is in the Ford Grey and D Blue. It NEVER had headlamps in the Grille. It may have had them attached to the side of the Radiator Surround, as there are two holes, one on each side that appear to be a mounting location.

Also the 1960 I saw had Fordson on the side of the Hood. On mine as you can clearly see are the letters FORD stamped into the hood sides.

I also understand the difference between Model Year and Production Date. When did Ford Tractors break their Model Year? Was it at July 31 / August 1 as they do much of the other Ford Products?

What other changes were done on the model year change overs? What differences were there between the "USA" delivered tractors and those delivered elsewhere?

Thanks! I will look forward to the different rplies.

The "Fordson Super Major" was released in 1960 in The UK and was painted blue with orange wheels. The headlights were re positioned inside the grill for the UK tractors but certain export markets had them positioned outside the grill with six horizontal bars on the grill panels (See the pic on this site of my 1962 super major). The New Performance Super Major releasead in May 1963 and was painted blue with grey fenders and wheels in the UK and other contries, in The US it was called the "Ford 5000 Super Major" and was painted blue with grey fenders and hood.

Hope this clears things up for you,

Steven

It's Called:

Dagenham Blue and Ford Gray

I will try and locate the color formulas. Someone else here also may have them. If I find them I will post them here.

I have a FMD that was built in January of 1957. I have been looking for the Dagenham Blue. Every paint shop or web site that I go to wants to lead me to the EARLY FORD blue which is too dark. My father in law remembers when they got their FMD brand new and he remembers the lighter blue, and the orange wheels. It must exist some place because I have a tractor book with some restored FMD's painted the correct blue. It's more of a sky blue then the darker blue. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

"Dagenham Blue" seems to be the name in the US. The official colour is "Empire Blue". If you cant get it, Ford Tractor Blue is a closer match than Old Fordson Blue wich is as you say, to dark.

Use Fiat Orange for the wheels. Paint the wheels off the tractor so that the rear hub is blue. Rear wheel nuts are silver and the front hub cover is blue.

Australian tractors had Red wheels and IHC Red is the closest match.

I visited my local New Holland Dealer today.

Per the parts people there and the parts book, there is a number of different Ford Blues.

The parts book says the correct "Ford Blue" for ALL ford tactors (including Fordson's) is as follows:

year 1952 through 1962 (perhaps model year 1963?)

New Holland Part Number M1J1639SE2DS for quarts

New Holland Part Number M1J1639SE3DS for gallons

There is a different number shown for 1963 and newer into the mid 1970's

They did not have any in stock so I could not buy the color to check it's shade.

That colour you mention would be correct for E1A Major, Power Major and Super Major as well as Dexta and Super Dexta and is used with orange wheels. The later colour is correct for New Performance Super Major, New Performance Super Dexta with grey wheels and fenders as well as US Ford 5000 Super Major and Ford 3000 Super Dexta with grey wheels, hood and fenders.
