Why were the Model F Fordson tractors (with a little age and field hours on them) always parked heading downhill? The steeper the slope, the easier they started.

Answer: With the front end of the tractor lower, the wear of the thrust surface in the bearing is eliminated and the magnets on the flywheel move closer to the coils in the "magneto." You can then generate enough electricity to make the coils produce a spark.

When parked on level ground, the magnets move far enough away from the coils that little voltage is induced when starting by hand. This is the only way to really start one since the drive train is not designed to allow for pull starting...you know, worm drive and all.

Now for my comment: Parking a Fordson on any incline is a dangerous practice. Without a brake to hold the tractor, a block of any kind is all that is keeping the tractor from running over you! I start my '23 model F with a battery and switch it over to the "magneto" afterward. Starting this machine is worrisome enough without being concerned for my personal safety. ST

Just how many farm hands did it take and how fast did they have to get pushed for them to start?

A good answer Jack, but that is not the answer.
Hint: Thrust washers - crankshaft - flywheel
