A little while back (12/16/01) I posted an appearent clutch related noise problem. I've mostly just not used the tractor since then in anticipation of getting into it a bit later. The following may be bad news rather than good. Today I was curious that although I had said the noise was in all gears I did not know if it was in high range. I had been consistently using low range. Today I tried that, and sure enough. In high range no noise except what may be normal straight cut gear noise but nothing alarming. As soon as I put it into low range the noise returns. I'm sorry I didn't make this observation to begin with. Now Brian and/or others, how unhappy should I be? Which bearings, gears, or what else might this imply? Go ahead and make me feel bad. Thank you, Bill

Chaps,

I have used and maintained a 63 FSM for the last few years.

I have filled the gearbox and rear axle with SAE 90 gear oil. This very thick and was the original spec for this application according to the workshop manual. To fill both takes about 60 litres (don't have the book to hand sorry)

The filler for the rear axle/hydaulics is behind the seat and the dipstick near to the cluth pedal is the level for this section. The filler/levelplug for the transmission is near to the clutch pedal. The level is marked on the vertical flat in front of the plug as you look at it.

Make sure the breather for the transmission is clear as the oil will expand when hot. The breather is the large headed bolt that holds on the battery tray steering box bracket and sometimes the earth strap for the battery. If this is blocked then the casing could crack due to the pressure build up.

Another thing to note is that in my experience on my machine which used to be fitted with a fore end loader so the hydraulic pump may well be worn. The hydraulics will not work if run on universal hyadrauic oil in hot conditions even though the book says that it should work. I guess the pump has trouble picking up this thin oil.

My machine is very quite even at road speeds. Obviously if you have a bearing problem the correct oil will not solve the problem!

Hope that helps to clarify the oil situation.

Simon

I´ld say don´t worry about it. My tractor and many other FMD´s i know make that noise too.
I was told that the straight cut gears cause the noise.
I´m no specialist, but as long as my FMD works fine, i don´t worry.

First, let me remind all that it is a live pto clutch tractor. I think there may be a bit of confusion with some of you in that I refer to straight cut gear noise. That does not alarm me and can be detected greatest in high range. The noise that does alarm me happens only BETWEEN full transmission clutch disengaged and full engaged position. Initially I had thought it to be within the bellhousing, ie: clutch related. More recently I confirmed it is ONLY in low range (any fwd. or rev. gear) but NOT in high range. The oil level is full and the oil used is the dual purpose type purchased from Ford/New Holland. It's so odd to me that the noise never appears after my foot is off the clutch AND never what so ever any time in high range. I wish I could record the sound and attach a sound clip here on the list. I doubt then anyone would call this sound acceptable then. I appreciate all the ideas but I want to give the best written description I can as no one can help when given bad or inadequate info. Thanks, Bill S.

The noise is not normal. The input shaft on the primary gearbox is in two halves and they are joined by a bearing, part number E1ADKN 7118 A(Standard PTO) or E1ADKN 7118 B (Live PTO). This bearing is loaded when in low range. The other bearings on this shaft, E1ADKN 7025 A is always loaded and N 7065 is loaded in high only.

I would suspect that bearing, but Brian would know better than me. Just my 2 bobs worth.

Steven

PS the hydralic oil is not taken from the gearbox on the E1A tractors.

I would say dont worry. As far as I can tell this is just the famous fordson crunch. It is becaused the gearbox is really designed for 90w gear oil but because of the hydroulics and fordson being cheap and not having a seperate tank for the hydroulic oil you have to put thinner oil the gearbox than it is meant to be run on. Of course I might be way off base but that is my opinion. And it is that way with my power major.

Then the question comes to mind, what weight gear oil shoud be used? I use THD, but what is the recomended weight by Fordson? Thanks, Jim Senger

The book of words says 4.5 imp gallons of 20W/30HD for the gearbox and 9 imp gallons of the same for the rear axle. I use universal tractor oil.
