I just bought a house in the country and it came with a 57 Major Diesel. The previous owner used it to clean up some of the property so I know it works. Problem is, I've never used a tractor in my life and I don't know how to start this thing. Before you ask, the owner is out of the country for good so I can't ask him. Please forgive my ignorance but could someone give me some advice without a lot of technical jargon. When I sit down, all I see is a mass of levers and buttons and I have no idea where to begin. HELP!!!

Procedure

1 Push stop control button in on dash.

2 On right hand side of dash is a lever, this is the throttle. Push down about half way.

3 On the right hand side of the engine is the injector pump, it has "Simms" writen on it. At the back of this is a little lever with a button on it. Press the button in, it should stay in. (This is used for cold start only and it pops out automaticly)

4 turn on the key.

5 Ensure the main gear lever is in neutral.

6 on the left of the dash panel is another lever that looks like the throttle, push it down (somtimes its stiff if the gears on the starter dont mesh)

7 relaease the lever as soon as the engine starts and return the throttle upwards to slow the engine to idle.

You will now fall imeadiatly in love with the sound of the greatest tractor ever built. ;-)

Do you know how to drive it?

This might not be necessary to mention but If you don't know how to stop the engine you should know that there is a stop button on the dash. Just pull it out and the fuel supply to the engine will stop and so will the engine.

Thanks very much. The tractor wouldn't start so I thought I was doing something wrong. The problem was the battery I had didn't have enough cranking amps to turn it over. Got a bigger battery and she cranked right up!! Great sound for sure!

I will have a few things to figure out about driving it. I had a little practice today with a bush hog attached to it. Ready to go out tomorrow and have some fun.

Once again, thanks for the reply.
Terry

I don't know if the '57 Major has live PTO, but if it doesn't, (live PTO: PTO is powered independent of the clutch, non-live PTO: PTO stops when you push in the clutch) get an ORC (overrunning coupler) to put on the PTO shaft before you connect the bush hog drive shaft. This device will allow you to stop the forward motion of the tractor. Without it, the inertia of the bush hog blades will continue to push the tractor forward, causing you to run in to things (trees, fence posts, buildings, wife's car).
