A fordson Model F has been given to me. The engine is free but there are some parts missing; the radiator core, carb, buzz boxes. The prices I have gotten for these parts are outrageous! I am currently looking for parts tractors and am following up on two. Is this normal for this machine? I have restored a Mc D 10-20, JD LA, JD B. I thought the green paint was expensive!

The problem with Fordson parts is no one is mass producing any common parts. Ignition parts like coils, coil points and some fuel fittings can be obtained from Model T Ford parts suppliers. However items like Fuel tanks, good radiator cores and some manifold parts are hard to find thus can be expensive. Do some research, depending on the restoration that you do there are many different fuel tank, manifild and fender combinations that differ depending what year the tractor is. If you just want to get it running any parts tractor will do.
Where are you pricing your parts from???

I priced parts at a place in Michigan. The manifold assembly with carb was $1600.00. The tractor I have has a single bung tank and a usable manifold. All of the ignition stuff is missing. How well do the original vaporizer/carburetor systems work? I would like to use original parts if I can find them. The tractor serial number indicates that it is a 1921. But, it has what I believe are grooves in the rear end for mounting fenders. I thought they did not use fenders until 1923. What do you think?

The original manifold system for your 21 would be a Holley 234, noted for it's swing away top fuel mixer. This is a good manifold, my personal experience is that it runs better on kerosene as intended, but you can run gas. The place in MI must be the Fordson House. the price they quoted must be for the new manifold with rebuilt mixer and metering assy. You can find them cheaper at swap meets if you do alot of hunting. someone has swapped the late rib type axle housing on your tactor, you might have the whole transmission/rear end swapped or a early engine cold have been installed in a newer tractor ( with the earlu fuel tank) The possibilites are endless.

First, congratulations on your first Fordson. As you have undoubtedly found, people will throw telephone numbers at you for Fordson parts. I would suggest to you that you first get the tractor to run anyway you can. The earlier Fordson manifold/carb assemblys are rare but, not impossible to find. If your current manifold is serviceable, just to get it running, try adapting a one barrel down draft carb to it. Adapter plates are easy to make and a 60s vintage Ford/Falcon carb works fine. As for the coil box, coils, wires, timer, etc call Langs Model T parts in Winchendon, Ma. He'll fix you up with some good rebuilt coils and a used model T box. You can buy the box rebuild kit cheap. If you go this route, remember that the box will need to be slightly modified with hangers for mounting on the engine block. Also, make sure you tell Langs that you need the short insulators for proper clearence. This may seem a lot of work and expense for a temp solution. Keep this in mind. When you show up at Tractor show with your unit, people will find 'YOU' with parts they want to sell/trade. This is where it pays off. Take your time locating what you need or you will pay the big $$$ in the end. Good Luck

A good source for reasonably priced parts is Ebay, under "Fordson." Also, try both "The Fordson House" in Escanaba, Mich at (906) 786-5120 (May be who you talked to) and 'Rosewood machine and Tool" in Rosewood, OH at (937) 362-3871, (Duane Helman is a great knowledgable source of info on Fordsons).

Good Luck.
