Why nobody knows the wheel color code of FMD???

Why is it that nobody seems to know the color code of the orange wheels in the Fordson Major and Dexta? I've seen that question coming up on a regular basis in this forum (and other forums too). The Fordson is so common tractor that someone must know the answer! Are there any old Ford dealers or people that have worked on the Fordson factory that would know the answer? Doesn't the Ford or New Holland have the information in their archives?

I'm asking this for two reasons. First, I think that it's impossible that this information could be lost for good. Maybe I should have better things to do than this, but I think that it's really interesting that nobody seems to know the correct color code. They sure know how to make the imperial blue and that color has changed too. They changed the blue color at the same time when they ghanged the wheel color from orange to grey.

Secondly, I would want to know the color code so I could paint the wheels of my Fordson. But that is not the main reason. The Fiat orange from New Holland will do fine in my tractor. It is told to be very near to the correct color.

Yes, I know that the color doesn't have to be exactly the same. My Fordson will never look exactly like when it came from the factory, anyway. But I'm sure there are people out there that want to make it perfect. Or is it that most of the Fordsons are still in daily use and there hasn't been any demand for the color because people haven't restored their work tractors?

This is a dumb question and I apologise in advance that I ever sent it.

Problem is Richard, Ford did not have made such a volume of orange as they did the blues and as Howard Rotovator orange is an exact match for the original colour, dealers like the one I worked for would use that instead.

Similar thing is happening to the "Fordson Super Major Grey".

Also it is nearly 40 years ago that Fords finished using the orange and they have been through a number of changes since then. They do not seem to be as helpful now. The heritage has been broken for all in the Case New Holland group and the people I knew on the training side of Ford have been "downsized".

No problem about asking the question though. It might start brains working. This forum has certainly had mine working overtime during the past few years.

Brian, what is "Howard Rotovator"?. I am not familiar with this.
How would I get some of this orange paint? Are body shop and automotive paint stores familiar with this?

Craig,

Howard were an Australian company who pioneered rotary cultivators. They were also known as rotary hoes. They painted all their machines a lovely bright orange. The paint is still available here in England from agricultural dealers. Even the local John Deere dealer stocks it along with colours like Nuffield "Poppy Red".

Brian, is this Howard orange available in the U.S.? If not do you think an Allis Chalmers or Minneapolis Moline orange would be a suitable substitute?
My '53 FMD is scheduled for paint on Jan 2.
Thanks for your help.

Craig,

Try Oscar's site. In the Fordson Questions there is a formular for "N" Fordson Orange. Its slightly darker than Persian Orange and all the MM's I have seen have been yellow.

Brian, thanks again for the response. I am not familiar with "Oscar's site". How do I get to it?
I should have been more clear on the MM color. I intened to refer to the wheel color, but in thinking about it, it is probably too red.
