The first thing anyone with a diesel tractor, or truck needs to make sure they have diesel fuel formulated for cold running. Semi trucks coming north from some southern states will shut down while driving up the interstates from the diesel fuel gelling. Once that happens, it's a pain to get them running, expecially next to the interstate. You can find a decent fuel additive at most any parts house, plus it'll help keep the injectors clean. Once that is taken care of, engine heaters are a good start. Block heaters are the best, tank heaters work well too. Freeze plug heaters work O.K., as long as you plug them in after you park your tractor for the day. They're typically only 500 watt heaters and the best they can usually do is help keep the motor warm. It would take all night to bring a cold engine up to a warm engine with a freeze plug heater. Glow plugs are good too, as long as you have a good battery or two or three. WARNING!!! If your motor has glow plugs, DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID! Unless you're looking for an excuse to buy a new motor. If you're in a real cold part of the country, you might want to check your owners manual and see about mixing kerosene with your diesel fuel. Kerosene is a hotter and quicker burning fuel so I would check your manual first. I don't like using starting fluid but sometimes you have no other choice. It can cause some internal problems to your motor. You can pour a little gasoline down the breather. It's not as volatable as starting fluid. Just a cap full is enough for your 40hp to 60hp tractors. A little more on the bigger ones. Hope this helps.

I have been using an "atomizer" to spray gasoline into the top of the air filter breather. It works fairly well, but the spray mechanism in the bottle doesn't like gas. A friend recommends that if you use starting fluid, get the engine rotating first and spray while it is cranking.

Yeah the gas will work okay but like John F says if the engine has glow plugs don't use gas or ether as they will blow the engine a part.

Ether will burst pistons and break the compression rings on a Perkins and/or Navistar diesel.
