FMD injector pump

Does the injector pump on the Fordson Major Diesel need any service? In Super Major there is a plug where you can add oil in it but what about the FMD. The owners manual of the FMD says that it never needs any oil and all the oil it needs is put in it at the factory. But did they know that it will be used for such a long time. Does it help if I put some oil in the fuel tank?

TH,
The FMD pump only needs oil when new or when it has been serviced and the diesel has drained from it. The oil stops it from running dry until the diesel gets into the cam box etc.

I would not put oil in the fuel as diesel itself is oily enough to keep everything OK.

Thanks for the answer, Brian.

My dad said that if for some reason any water gets into the pump, it will break. Is that true, and if it is, why? (I don't mean the possibility of freezing.)

Dad is right and wrong! The danger from water is not so much the frost damage but more the rust damage.

Diesel can be used as a releasing fluid on rusty bolts etc. It will creep down the threads and lubricate them.

If it will find areas to track when under just atmospheric pressure, think what it will do under 2000 psi.

The clearances in the injection pump are measured in microns (thousandths of a millimeter) many times smaller than the thickness of a cigarette paper. They have to be this small to seal and create the pressure to inject.

Water in the pump will cause rust to form very quickly, rust grooves the pumping elements and diesel flows down the rust marks so not allowing the pump elements to build up pressure.

Dirt will also cause scoring of the pump parts. This is why all work on the pump should take place in a dust proof room.

Always take your pump to a diesel repair shop for work on the pumping parts. Never attempt to overhaul it yourself. You could end up with more trouble than you started with.
