I am one generation removed from farming and recently purchased 30 acres for a home place and hobby farm. My Grandfather had a 1956 fordson major diesel and he sold it in 1969 to a local farmer. The farmers son has it and I have contacted him with interest in buying that tractor. I offered him $5,000.00 for it an he said that he isn't wanting to sell it right now but would keep me in mind if he ever does. I hope I didn't offend him with a too low offer, any ideas???? thanks

$5000 is about $2000 more than a good FMD should bring but since it was family, cost may not be a factor sometimes. I bought a '56 FMD for $200. It looks rough, leaks, and is missing the hood, but it works and it works hard. I got mine at a bargain; it may have been worth $600 more.

Yikes! $5000 is a lot to pay. I bought a '58 Fordson Major in good working condition for $1700 at an auction a few years ago. There aren't a lot of them around but they do appear once in a while in farm auctions. There are also some posted for sale once in a while through internet sites. Be patient. Keep your eyes open. If you're not in a hurry, one will come up for sale eventually1. It took me about 6-8 months of looking before I found the one I mentioned above. Good luck!
