Hello all

My 1963 Super Dexta is overheating shortly after I start it up and run it. It has the Perkins 3 cyl diesel engine. Beyond the obvious of exchanging the antifreeze/coolant, is there anything else I should look for?

Thanks.

Bill

I remember a customer's Dexta that that would overheat in a few minutes when loaded. It had a worn out waterpump impeller; we kidded him about using sandy water; maybe the Dexta has a tendency to cavitate at the waterpump. Leave the rad cap off and warm the engine up till the thermostat opens. A good waterpump should produce obvious flow in the top radiator tank.

It's sometimes hard to tell if an engine is overheating or if it has a compression leak from the cylinders into the waterjacket. Take the fan belt off and run it for a few minutes; if you see bubbles in the radiator top tank, it's bad news: head gasket, cracked head or cracked block.

Thanks Rod. That is certianly a comprehensive list, and hopefully it will be one of the simple ones. I still haven't had a chance to work on it yet, but I will keep an eye out.

Try blowing out the rad from the rear. The Dextas rads have very narrow fins , much like a car , and get blocked very easily.

You, should be able to get a thermostat from a NAPA store if there is one close. How does the coolant look you might also need to run some flush though the system ,also adding some cooling sysem conditioner to protect your cylinders .This will help keep holes from coming in liners.

Thanks for the suggestions Ferrel. I haven't had a chance to work on it yet, but I did look at the coolant, and it is pretty "thin" looking. I'll probably flush it as well, and look for the conditioner while I'm at the store.

The Dexta is bad about getting dirty in the radiator air fins. All you have to do is blow it out with compressed air or wash the rad out from the back side towards the front. Just be sure not to use a powerwasher or the flues will shatter. The only other thing is the generater belt may be loose.

Thanks Burrhead. I looked over the radiator, and while I didn't find much in the way of dirt, it is easy enough to blow it out with some compressed air while I'm changing the coolant.

It's probably what Burrhead said, but it could also be the thermostat.

Thanks Oscar. I'll keep an eye on that. After I change the fluid and blow it out, I'll just have to see if it keeps getting hot. If it does, that'll be the next thing to try. The closest Ford dealer is about 40 miles though, so I hope the thermostat is good for a while longer.
