Dexta Steering Wheel

I got it badly stuck last week, and that was enough to finally wear off the last of the splines inside the hub of the steering wheel. (The splines on the shaft look better, that is there still are some; I hope they're still enough) It just broke loose and spun freely. So far, I've been unable to track down a replacement, which is no fun because a tractor isn't much good if you can't steer it.

I'm wondering if anyone out there (A) knows where else I should look -- new, salvage, I don't care as long as it works... or (B) which old cars or other tractors I should start looking at to find one that'll work. I saw a somekinda-N the other day with what looked like a the steering wheel from an old car or maybe boat.... or (C) clever ideas for how to stick one on that *doesn't* fit -- ways which do not involve just welding it on the end of the shaft, preferably!

Or of course, you could disconnect the
long rods on each side of tractor and try steering with your feet!!

David,

I ordered my Dexta Steering Wheel from Walt's Tractor Parts (See Parts & Supplies, this site). It is presently back ordered but at least there appears to be a possibility of obtaining it. If your gear splines are stripped, it is possible that it was the wrong steering wheel installed anyway.

Fortunately, my old steering wheel still works but has one broken spoke which could be welded. I would then take it to a local upholster shop and have them recover with sometype of weather proof material.

The other alternative I was considering was to have the top of a Ford N spline welded directly onto the top of the existing Dexta spline. The Ford N spline is smaller and should weld quite easily. Certain Ford N steering wheels are readily available and I have seen them for as low as $19. Check with your local Ford Holland dealership. Good Luck, JoeD.
