1951 fordson major E27N need info on controls

I also own a 1951 E27N major. I'm no expert but here goes. I crank start mine (it's the "base" model which doesn't have any electrics). Retard the spark by moving the lever on the right hand side of the dash clockwise. It falls into a notch at the start position. This is fully retarded. Any further to the right stops the spark to stop the engine. Check that it's out of gear! May sound over cautious but you'd be surprised! Open the throttle about 5 notches by pulling on the lever with the loop handle on the right hand side. With the petrol on and full choke I turn it over compression a few times. (Lifting the crank handle to swing it over compression is the safe way to avoid it kicking back. Keep your thumb on the same side as your fingers. It won't break your thumb if it kicks.) Then I open the choke a touch and try for signs of life. Hopefully it should fire! Open the choke as you need to. Moving the spark lever anti-clockwise advances the spark until it runs sweetly without knocking. The manual I have suggests two turns on the main mixture jet ( Probably two and a bit to start with would be OK). If someone has fiddled with this it could make it make more difficult so its worth checking. If your worried about cranking it, turn the spark off when you first prime it with full choke. Turn the spark on when you open the choke. Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on! (If anyone else knows better I'm all ears!)

The mixture screw is the one on the bottom. Wind it all the way in and then unscrew it about 2 and a quarter turns. The manual says 2 turns but this is when the engine is warm. You'll be able to lean it off a little when it's running (wind it in ) Let us know how you go!
