Fordson Major as Work Tractor?

I may be bringing home a Major within a few weeks and I am new to Fordsons. I use a rare high-crop Case /w 3pt for work around the house but I want to use a bigger, preferably an antique, low standard tractor. Near my home is a Fordson Major that has had engine work done so it is in good shape but the Simms fuel pump is bad. The mechanic says it will run but not good. The rear tires are good and all are up. The owner has no use for it and it has been at the mechanic's shop for 4 years. I don't know much about the diesel except it has a handle on the valve cover for breaking compression. I'm thinking: repair the pump, find a hood, and I will have a good, useful, and cheap tractor. Am I right or is there more to consider?

You should have no problems with your Major they are just about bomb proof!!!. We still use them for certain types of site work today!!. We also have a lot of machinery powered by the 4D/6D engines.

Get the pump sorted soonest it is not a expensive job and if looked after will give years of service. If the injector's have'nt been serviced or checked get them done at the same time.

In England the de-commpresion lever was only fitted to industrial spec. motors so it is most likley a replacement but should still be good, in fact you should have about 6/10 h.p. more.

Always change the engine oil on a regular basis and everytime change the oil filter. The gearbox and rear axle oil should be changed, but only if you can get hold of 90/140EP gear oil. Thinner oils fall off the cogs as they turn very slowly!!.

One final tip every six months change your fuel filter, the paper tends to collapse. Every winter make sure the glass water trap bowl has no water in, they crack easy!! and every winter crack open the rear axle drain bung you usally get about a cup of water out due to condensation, the water can damage the hydrualic pump on frosty mornings.

Enjoy the best tractor ever made!!

I read with interest your article on gearbox oils. Can I use therefore 90/140EP on gearbox, rear axle and hydraulics? Fordson Super Major. Diesel. 1964. Live clutch.
Best wishes. Richard.

The Fordson Major is a great tractor to work or rally. They are extremely economical to run and reliable. As one of the other replies mentioned, where are you located for spare parts? They can be a challenge to find some parts for.As far as the engine, they are great, start well when cold[Massachusetts].I run a Dagenham E1A 220 engine in a Ford F-100 pick-up truck and it delivers over 30 mpg. With the overdrive Clark 5 speed it is every bit a powerful as the 6 cylinder gas that came out of it.So I say.....Fix that Simms pump!I just put a New Old Stock reman pump on the truck.Good Luck!

The distributor on the Fordson gas tractors is a Lucas built unit out of England. The caps are not too hard to find but I have never had to replace the complete distributor on my 62 Dexta. What makes you think you need to replace the complete distributor?

If it is the fuel pump and not the Injector pump you might try a cheap low PSI electric fuel pump found in most auto parts stores. I did and found my Fordson started slightly better. I was having trouble a few winters ago with the engine dying on me. I think it was fuel starved from a weak fuel pump. I am told the fuel pump is usually an easy reuild but the electric one works nice also.

I'm not a Farmer but I live in 50 acres of wooded property. My primary uses will be scraping the driveway, moving dirt with a scoop pan, and moving junk tractors around and lifting heavy objects. The heavier weight of the Major is more than my Case and better for doing these things.
