I recently replaced the crankshaft rear oil seal on my 59 Dexta Diesel and it now leaks worse than it did before. Is there any trick to installing these rope type oil seals or something special which needs to be done in order to get them to seal properly. Any ideas or advice would be sincerely appreciated.

You did'nt say how you did yours so I'll tell you how I do mine and I have'nt ever had a problem.

1st off I soak my new seal in motor oil all nite before I'm gonna put it in.

With the seal retainer off I shine all the inside and outsides with a wire wheel on my drill and then install the rope.

Install the rope with about 1/16" protruding at all ends. Put just a skim of silicone between the halves of seal retainer, don't get any on the rope.

Tighten the 2 seal retainer bolts 1st to pull the seal down tight on the shaft, then put just barely a skim of silicone on the block and install the 6 connecting bolts.

The only time I ever saw one of these seals leak after renewal was when there was a hair line crack in a retainer cap.

I think soaking the new seals over nite in oil is actually the most important step.

Hope this helps-Jerry

Jerry, Thanks a bunch, I will try your method. The overnite soaking sounds like it may do the trick.
