Hey all! I am new to the antique tractor world. My family and I decided to embark on a project to restore a 1920s Fordson F. The tractor is being delivered this coming weekend. (south-western Massachussets) I know its an early 20s model, but I have to do a little more research (such as dig the numbers on the dash out of all that paint) I am going to need all the help I can get. Never worked on anything this old (much less a tractor). I am also in need of a lot of parts, including the manifolds, carb, and ingition system. Any and all advice is welcome. Any information anyone has on parts sources would be really helpful. Also, did these things have brakes? There aren't any on this one, does not look like there ever was. Thanks!!

Please pardon my stupid questions, I know nothing about these machines! Ummm... What kind of gas do these use, and I hear mention of the seperate cast iron tank. There is a tank on this one, it had a big opening on top, and bottom, just behind the engine. Is this an oil reserve tank? Or some kind of gas tank, its on the opposite side form the mainifolds (left side) Thanks all for you help! Its being delivered tomorrow!

Depending on what year tractor you have and what manifold it is equiped with you could have several different tank/manifold set-ups. You stated that it was a early 20's tractor. If this is the case you more than likley have a Holly 234 or Holly 280, both kerosene manifolds. Fordson tractors had the capability of starting on gas (small tank on the side of the air washer or a small tank placed inside the large fuel tank, rear cap, this held the starting fuel)and when the engine and manifold warmed up the fuel was switched to kerosene that was cheaper to buy in the 20's.( kerosene needs to be heated to increase is flash point to be ignited) When you get your tractor running you can run it on gas from the main tank, however I have noticed on my 1918 with the Holly 234 it runs better on kerosene or #1 diesel fuel than gas, reason being the the after gasoline passes thru the tube the heats the fuel/air mixture it loses some of it's "punch". After you bring your tractor home, check out Amazon.com or Stemgas.com for books on Fordsons, research helps!! ( at stemgas go to "gas engines" and go to item #G40, a 1925 fordson operators book ) Good luck!! Adam

Well, The Tractor is here. I have looked it over, and as far as I can tell, its a '23. It has the one compartment gas tank, I can see where the extra tank was attached, but it does seem to be missing, but the entire fuel system is missing. I got a manifold for it, but its in pretty sorry shape. There is no ignition system either. The engine is seized as well. I have my work cut out for me. The guy we got it from has had it for 20 years or so, and it was seized when he got it. The engine does not have a serial number that I can find. On the head it says F133RD HIGH COMPRESSION. Thats it for the engine. The latest pat No. on the dash is May 1 1922. So that big cast iron box right behind the engine is the air washer? Wow, i gotta get a manual. Help me out guys! I need all of the info I can get.

Best thing you can do is familiarize your self with fordson tractors via info from books and the net and hit the swap meets next spring ( if you have those out east) and try to find the Fordson parts you need.

Owen: We will need your engine serial number...located at the front right corner of the engine between the No. 1 intake and exhaust ports.
Transmission brakes were OEM from the factory from 1923 on. Your engine number may not necessarily accurately date the rest of the tractor... if the engine was ever changed. The bulk of the ignition system is identical to the Model T... except for the Fordson coil box... and a bit longer wiring harness to accomodate the larger engine block and head. Manifolds may be any one of about six different types on the Model F. An original carburetor will be a bit of a challenge to find.. but they are out there. Keep us posted on your progress
