Dexta clutch.. fixed!

I finally found time to finish the clutch repair job I started 2 months ago. The cause was nine out of twelve 3/8" bolts disappearing from the engine adapter plate. This caused the tractor to break in half (prevented only by the front end loader frame)
The effect was to break the hub out of the PTO clutch plate. Ford "overhauled" the clutch and set it up correctly for $535CDN. Ouch!
I did not replace the throwout bearing because it was too expensive and mine seems fine.
The tractor went back together with no problems except the usual spline lineup problems and my improvised Delco alternator wiring.
I'd like to thank the forum contributors for their generous sharing of information.
Upon putting the tractor back to work I ran into the hydraulic quirks that were outlined in the "Dexta Hydaulic problem" thread. So, no problem for me...
Thanks again.

Congrads on getting her fixed.

Now all you need to do is get up early and work hard making the Dexta pay you back on the cost.

Good point about it is that now you should'nt have any problem with that for a long long while.

The clutch should be OK but the rest of the tractor needs so much work. The ether dependency problem is next. Also the bodywork is rusted out -far worse than my Ford 8N, but thats just cosmetics...

You might do a compression check to be sure what you need to do.

I have fixed these Perkins that would'nt crank by having the fuel injectors rebuilt and that cured the problem.

If it's running at least 90-100 psi on the compression most times and injector cleaning will get it to crank.

Also most times when they go to blowing black smoke like a freight train it's the injectors if the air cleaner is clean.

I get no smoke at all. I'm surprised about the 100 lbs compression, I'm used to comp. readings of over 150lbs with cars and motorcycles burning gas at 9:1 ratios.
I found a 1/16"? line on the intake manifold (at the heater)that has been sealed off. It probably used to go the fuel tap primer button which I don't have anymore. I'll have to come up with some other arrangement to get a squirt of fuel in the manifold for starting...

That low amount is the very minimum the engine will fire on. Most times if the prssure is that low they will run but not pull any, they just white smoke out the exhaust and blow a steady stream of compression out the crank breather tube.

Perkins calls for 350 psi on a good engine. I have to admit tho, I never have seen one that was that high.

Probably, then; a "normal" good reading might be 175-250. That makes sense to me. Thanks; Gerald

Most of them I have checked run around 175 to 200 tops.

On the Dexta, I used to get alot of black smoke, even at idle. The problem was the diaphragm in the injector pump. It had a hole in it and thus was giving full fuel at all engine speeds. Bought a new one at the local diesel injection shop. Cleared up the smoke and cut wayyyyy back on fuel consumption. How do you check the compression on the diesel engine? Where do you connect the guage to?

You have to take the injector out and use the rubber tipped auto type gauge into the injector hole, just push it as hard as you can into the injector hole and hope for the best.
