My 3 cyl diesel just had a overhaul and now I have smoke coming out the bottom of the engine thu the tube that runs from the top of the engine. The breather tube? My overhauler says "Normal" till rings seats. Also, oil is seeping from the joint from the engine to transmission. Is this normal? I now have 50 hours on the engine and same amount of smoke from the first hour. any comments will be helpfull. Exaust has almost no smoke.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
You will always get some smoke from the breather. The engine needs about 300 to 400 hrs really hard work to get bedded in properly. This does not mean over-reving or overloading, just a nice constant load at 1600 to 1800 rpm.

Oil changes at 50 and 150 hrs would also be benificial. The oil you are using is also important. I would use a straight diesel engine oil rather than a multiuse or multipurpose. Multiuse or multipurpose oils contain additives to lubricate inboard brakes. If you engine does not work hard, these additives can form glazing on the bores and cause oil burning and heavy breathing.

The oil leak at the transmission joint could either be engine or gear oil. If it is engine it could be from the camshaft plate seal or the crankshaft oil seal. If gearbox oil, then gearbox seals. Both areas could need the attention of your service engineer.

regards
Brian
