Contact Breaker Points

I am restoring a '52 petrol/vaporising oil Major and need to find replacements for the contact breaker points and possibly the condenser. I haven't taken the distributor off yet (and won't if I don't have to), but I cannot see a maker's name or model number on it anywhere. The workshop manual talks about two different timing settings, but doesn't give much other help. Was this a Fordson manufacture, or was it a rebadged item from Lucas or someone? Can anyone help with a source for replacements, please - preferably in the UK?

Bob,
Points and condensor are available from Lucas. They build these at certain times of the year so get an order in asap. I have been waiting since last October for parts for mine. My local Lucas manager assures me that they are in hand.
You should not be able to get the timing wrong as the distributor has an offset drive.
Turn the engine until No. 7 and 8 valves are on the "rock" with the pointer on the timing cover lined up with the notch on the front pulley. You should now be on No 1 fireing stroke.
The parts for the fuel tap are going to be difficult. I made my large cork seal from a piece of cork. The "O" rings came from a boxed set of assorted sizes from a factor. Go careful with the tap as it is easy to strip the threads in the tap valves.

Brian
Got the Nuffield picture. Looks great. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I am a Fordson collector in Canada and need to get in contact with Lucas to purchase some caps/points etc.

Do you have any contact info you could share?

Please email me directly at mjohnson@compusmart.sk.ca

Thanks in advance

Hi from Canada!

Bob,
Something I forgot to say. If you look on the inside of the cap, the part number is cast into the plastic. It is also stamped into the points and cast on the rotor arm. This is the Lucas part number. If you cannot find it, mail me and I will send you the ones from mine. I am sorry we had so little time to talk at Newark. I had problems with a leaky gasket on the manifold with the Major so did not get her into the ring.
We have ploughing days at Wells next the Sea in late September when a wide variety of tractors are working. Its on a weekend so see if you can get up and come and drive the Major.
regards
Brian

Brian

Thanks for the info. and I am glad the 'photo got to you OK - I am still trying to master that bit of the technology! I'd like to get to the ploughing days - I took Simon, my son, to Holcot Steam Fair yesterday (Fred Dibnah in attendance) and Simon was also very interested in the ploughing, but a heavy shower made the ground too greasy, so no-one could get any grip and they had to abandon the event. If you let me know when/where, we'll try to make it.

Put another coat on the fuel tank for the petrol Major today and fitted new fan belt, rad. cap and top hose on the FSM. Si took off the fore-end loader radiator guard (like a set of bull bars, so that he could have a closer look at the front cowl and I think he wished he hadn't - the bottom three/four inches have rotted away. Looks like a new cowl will have to happen, when funds are available.

Speak to you soon - Regards

Bob
