Since I never had a tractor before and I just bought a dexta 1960. I would like to know if
it should need the glow plug to start at 72 degrees and if yes what is the proper way of doing
it including the push botton on the fuel tap that I don't know what it is used for.I had diesel car but never this type of diesel engine

Thanks

Jack,
There are a two ways to get a Dexta to start when cold.
1. Open the throttle to about half way.
2. Push in (Minimec pump) or pull out (Vaccum governed pump) the excess fuel button on the piviot of the stop control on the injection pump.
3.Operate starter

or

1. Open throttle to about half way
2. Heat engine for about 20 to 30 sec.
3. Press fuel plunger under tap twice.
4. Operate starter.
Check that your tractor does not have a small tap where the pipe enters the glow plug. If it does, turn this on for starting and off once the engine is running. This prevents fuel being drawn or pumped into the manifold when the engine is runing.

or

1. Open throttle half way.
2. Push in cold start button on pump.
3. Heat for 20 to 30 secs.
4. Pump fuel plunger after making sure tap is open.
5. Operate starter.

With a good battery and a reasonable engine she should start in most weathers. People on this site also reccommend block heaters for extreem cold conditions.

Never ever use ether!!!!! You will get banned from the site as a Dexta Killer.;)
regards
Brian

Jack & Brian my Dexta will crank fine at 25 degrees with no glow plug or primer. All I've done different on mine was to put a 1025CCA battery from NAPA in place of the 775 CCA that was in it when I got it years ago.

It usually cranks before it turns over 2-3 rounds.

Like Brian said that ether will kill a Perkins. It will crack the pistons.

Thanks Burr

I'll try to start it w/o prime and glow plug and if it doesn't start i'll put the 1025 to see. I did put the block heater like Brian suggest this
should help for canadian winter.I really like
this little tractor it is stronger than I tought.

You're welcome.

Yessir the Dexta is a pretty good machine.

I have a friend who bought a 231 MF last year. It has the 152 CID Perkins on it too. He gets disgruntled when I out pull him with my Dexta.
