As near as I can tell my FMD is a 1957 (S/N 1413336). I have started to replace the rear axle seals but feel it may be a bigger chore than expected. Can anyone tell me of a good source for service/parts manuals? I went to purchase one on the net and it listed 2 manuals (FMD early and one that included FMD FSMD and others). Also I can only lift the 3 pt with the PTO engaged. Is this operating correctly or is there an operator error? I replaced the hyd cylinder seal and 3pt still bleads down slowly after lifting. Anyone have suggestion? Thank you in advance.

Jack

Jack: First question... replacing the seals is not too bad.... but most likely a two man job for safety if you have liquid ballast and/or weights on those rear drivers. Your tractor does not have what we call... 'live power' and the hydraulic pump to lift the 3 point is only functioning when you have the PTO driveline engaged. That is normal for your tractor. As far as the leaking of the 3 point after you installed the cylinder seal kit.... if it take several hours to settle.. that is probably about as good as you will get it.. because of wear and scoring of the cylinder wall over time. If it settles in a few minutes... the cylinder wall may be scored too bad.. or you could have a valve sticking a bit or some sediment under it allowing fluid to bypass.

Thanks for the info. Don (CO). I have the rear wheels off of the tractor and wondering where to go to next. Does the axle housings have to come off inorder to remove the axle and "tin cap"? More info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jack,
Remove the hydraulic lift. Inside are the large gears of the final reduction. Take out the split pins and remove the large nuts. Go to the ends of the axle housings, remove the tin covers. Draw the half shafts out of the axle housings. Remove the bearing from the half shaft, this is normally done with a puller or large press if you want to refit it. Fit new seal making sure you put it in the tin housing the right way round, seal lip to oil. Refit the bearing. Refit the half shaft and replace the nut. Tighten nut tapping the centre of the half shaft where the wheel fits to ensure all is home. Tighten nut up solid then loosen back slightly to fit split pin. Tap tin seal down in three places into the retaining grove. Replace hydraulic lift. Refit wheels and seat.
regards
Brian

Brian,
I'm coming in late on this, but think you might be able to also help me.
I have a Power Major ( 1961 I think ). The 3 Point hitch will lift and hold, but is useless at powering down i.e, It will not drive a plow into the ground, only allows it to "float". Can you offer any suggestions as to what causes this problem. Also, does the 3 point hitch hydraulics, use the same oil as the final drive lubricant ?
Would appreciate your reply. Thanks.
