I have a super major (year unknown) with a seized connecting rod. Anyone know where I can get info to identify year of tractor(#'s are not where they are supposed to be).I also would like info on any engines or parts. I live in New Jersey.

Vaughn,
Check on the front axle for a number that starts "A7F" or "3C24". If you cannot see any there, try the clutch side of the gearbox housing, the rear axle housing or the lift unit. If your lift unit has a Knob on the front under your right leg it must be after 1963. The engine could be out of an older tractor though with that skid unit number. The casting code above could be your best bet. Are you sure its a bearing siezed and not timing gear bolts broken that can give a similar lock up. In this case however the engine can be turned.
Let us know how you get on. We can all help on this site.
regards
Brian
PS The letters "FL" on the head could also give us a clue to the age.

I think a piston seized to the crank because the engine turns over with a nasty sqeaking at the back of the motor. It was running when this happened. It was almost like it ran out of fuel, shut off with the squeaking and wont restart. I have plenty of fuel at the injectors and the timing appears correct. I think i lost oil psi and bound something up in the bottom end this winter plowing snow . This really stinks as I just replaced a head gasket to stop coolant into the oil and combustion chamber. This poor thing was totally neglected when I adopted it.

Vaughn: You do not have a number on the block, upper right front corner? If you are sure there is no number on that block.... hmmm, Brian or Steven and I may be able to ask some specific questions on features your engine has and 'maybe' determine whether it is an older Mark I or II engine. Re-check that block again.... very closely, see if you find a number stamped in the flat boss... about 1/2 in wide and 3 inches long... starting with an " O 8 A,B,C...etc"

I don't know if my first reply went through so here's number two. I found a number on a spot upper right front of block, engraved in; S434759. This number is no-where to be found in my manual. Is this a good number? Would ya know the where abouts of a decent 4 cyl diesel motor?

Vaughn: You have an engine in that tractor that was taken out of, what we call a skid unit. Chances are it came out of a County conversion or other tractor conversion. I have not found any source to accurately date a skid unit engine. I'm sure records were kept... but, no one has come up with them yet.

Is your Major a two wheel drive Super Major?

I have a two wheel drive unit with the corn/wheat logo and the words super major on the nose cowl. All attempts to repair the unit from the manual correspond (by picture) to a super major.

If you have the manual, we can narrow it down considerably.

1 If your tractor has a vacume govenor on the injector pump it is 1960 to mid 1962.
2 If your tractor has a Minimec mechanical governed injector pump it is mid 1962 to mid 1963.
3 If your tractor has the leters "FL" cast between number 1 and 2 injectors on the cylinder head it is mid 1963 to 1964. (In the US this tractor is called the Ford 5000 Super Major and is painted blue with grey hood and fenders).

The number may be on the flywheel housing near the starter motor (beneith the oil bath air filter).
