Thanks for the comments: the fuel problem was the pump: nearly seized, and only oozing on pumping. Do you have any idea what pressure the relief valve should open at on my fordson major loader with a dowty pump?

Steven has it straight down the line. I would aim for 2000 psi maximum.

I used to have a Ford 5000 with a Tracgrip backhoe in New Zealand. It had a Vickers (vane) pump that flowed 24gpm and the relief valve was set to 1800psi. We modified it to produce 2200psi. That pump on your tractor appears to be a gear pump. I would say that 1800psi would be safe. It would not be less than 1600psi. If it is less than 1600psi I would play with it. If it is greater than 1600 the problem you have must be tn the FEL spool valves (internal leakage etc)

My neighbour has just got a Tracgrip 3 wheel ride on tipper truck powered by a side valve BSA engine, model MAJ BSA, serial no. 6077 made by Tracgrip Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. I havn't yet found any UK references, I guess your Tracgrip backhoe is an NZ product and nothing to do with our 3 wheel market garden truck?
Incidently I grow organic vegetables on 5ha. with a Ford 4600 and a Dexta with loader for compost making.

Another thought, if your spool valves leak, you will never get full pressure. If you adjust your relief valve and the pressure remains the same, return the relief valve to its original setting and look at the O rings in your spool's.
