I am about to order the paint for my tractor, a 1962 Fordson Super Major. Here is the problem. In the UK market it would be blue with orange wheels. My tractor has red wheels and I assumed someone had painted them the wrong colour. I have just found out that all Aussie Fordsons from E27N had RED wheels except the New Performance Super Majors with grey wheels.

The problem, the Red looks awfull, I don't like it. Should I paint them orange like the UK tractors, or go with authenticity and paint them red?

Also, its supposed to have this exhaust pipe that looks like an 1890's American steam locomotive. I don't like that either. Its not getting one. Does this mean I won't go to Fordson Heaven when I leave this mortal coil and will be made to drive a Massey Ferguson 135?

I had the exact same conundrum a month ago. I decided to paint my 1960 super major wheels gray
because I couldn't find the right orange. I also did the loader and loader frame gray instead of yellow. It looks nice but plain. For an accent I painted the wheel lug nuts red. Someday I may paint the wheels red-orange. It's just paint after all. Have fun.

Steven,
I would not work outside!!! Henry Ford might send down a lightening strike. Or I suppose he might send up an earthquake for even THINKING the changes you suggest!!!!

Seriousely though, does it really matter! The thing is that it gives you pleasure.

My problem is with people who modify, then show it as original. At "Fordson Heaven" there were model "N"s with everything from V8's to P6's and even a Dexta with a 590 fitted. All great jobs but not original Fordsons. None of the JD's, David Brown, or Nuffields were other than original so why accept the changes to Fordsons?

Sorry, on my high horse.

If you were really good, you could get to NUFFIELD heaven. Mine covered just under 200 miles with Major on the back to the show.Average speed 20mph.
I found something out doing it though. My knee joints are loosing their flexability with age.
regards
Brian

You raise the ever interesting issue of authenticity. My point of view is that there are no rules other than the ones you set for yourself. If you restore your tractor to UK-specs, then you sort of have a unique tractor in Australia, I guess.

I have made a few deliberate non-authentic changes to my Dexta as well: I have both the front-of-nose "Fordson Dexta" decal and the bonnet decals (originally, my tractor only had the front-of-nose affair). I also painted the exhaust pipe the same color as the rest of the tractor, because the original was powder-coated aluminium that just got dirty, dirty and more dirty.

One could also wonder about things like front loading systems, power steering and the likes. Original? Perhaps. Fun? Definitely!

Whatever makes you happy.
