I hav an old Fordson Dexta which I use for grass-cutting and general mucking out duties. Yeserday, whilst attempting to engage reverse, I engaged a forward gear instead and the box now seems to be completely stuck. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Your problem may be caused by the following, common, problem that my dexta also suffers. There is an easy temporary field-fix that also serves to tell you whether this is the case or something else is wrong with your transmission. Open the lid that holds the levers. You will find that the feet of the levers go into a sort of box consisting of two halves, both on separate sliders. Caused by wear you will be able, at some point in the tractors lifetime, to pull the lever out of the box. Realign the box-halves, make sure the levers' foot drops in and close the transmission. Now you will be able to go on for a bit, shifting carefully, but eventually you will need to solve whats wrong. By disassembling the transmission you will be able to mount new 'box halves'. You could also try to make the bulb on the foot of the lever a bit fatter by welding and grinding. This is what I plan to do at least. What is the opinion of the expierienced dexta mechanics on this? Good luck!

Good advise! This is standard Dexta procedure. With a little careful welding and grinding it will last for years without major problems.

Brian

Exactly. Almost every old Dexta has this problem. Make sure to always carry the tools with you that you need to remove the gear levers. I learned that the hard way, having to drive home in reverse once! And Brian is correct (as he always is) when he says that the fix he and Fokke propose will take care of the prob for years to come. I'd advise against changing the little metal shoes that the levers fall move in and out of; the prob lies with the levers, not the shoes.

I have the same experience with the Dexta gearbox, but I don't mind.I think that this is also a part of driving such a nice old tractor.I always say: if you treat the dexta gearbox with respect, he will do the same to you.
