Does the FMD have a live PTO to use with pto driven mowers and bailers? Does anyone know if the pto speed is around 540 rpm?

Sometimes you take what you can get.I have the Major with no power steering,no live lift,no live pto, limited external hydraulics capabilities ie. one way lift and arms function in conjunction but I like the tractor. It does a super job. I do have the overrun attachment on the PTO - It does a super job mowing (IH 7' haybine),bush hogging (heavy duty 5' B.H. brand). No round baling but you certainly can square bale if you rake windrows carefully (no big piles to stop for).As for PTO speed I never run anywhere near 1600 but,(and I am looking for any corrections here please)page 9 on the original instruction book gives 722 PTO rpm @ 1600 rpm of engine.Works for me.

I was brought up on a Fordson Major Diesel like yours. It was the tractor that started a life long love, the part that won my heart was the injector pump drive spinning on the engine.

The early FMD's are fine for these jobs. For ploughing and such the live pto is no real advantage. I just got sick of getting of and disconecting the PTO drive when I put the mower up.

Your tractor is 540rpm PTO @ 1200rpm engine.

BTW, did you get the pictures?

The live PTO is nice because you can stop the tractor and let the bailer catch up without having to go to nuetral and back into gear each time.
I don't know about any pictures!

William

The pictures were for Helton.

I agree with your bailer comment.

Live PTO on the FMD was rare as it was only available as an option during the last year of production. It was common on the Power Major and Super Major, in fact, here in Australia a Standard PTO Super is almost unheard of (some dealers deny thier existance but they are wrong)

PTO speed on live drives is the same as std pto, ie 540rpm @ 1200 engine rpm. If the "Raised PTO" option is specified (Power Major and Super Major) then the PTO speed is 540rpm @ 1600 engine RPM until mid 1963. After the intoduction of the New Performance Super Major, all PTO's were 540rpm @ 1200 engine RPM.

If you are going to purchase a tractor for hay work, I strongly sugeest you try to get one with the Raised PTO. This will allow you to use the hydraulic lft with the PTO disengaged. Live drive would be my second priority. I have a 1962 Super Major with the Raised and Live options. Also, go for a Power Major or Super Major as they have a Proof Meter (Tachometer) with the PTO and ground speeds marked on it.
