Could anyone explain the reasoning behind using the back-axle oil work the hydraulics too? I have seen references on this board to situations where metal particles from bearing or other failures in the rear transmission casing (axle, bull pinion shafts etc) causes damage to the hydraulic system.

Why didn't Ford use a completely separate system for the hydraulics?

What solutions do other makes of tractor of the same vintage use?

Many thanks

J-P

J-P,
Most tractors use the rear axle oil and its not too much of a problem. The oil capacity allows for large amounts to be withdrawn when tipping trailers or using loaders. Some tractors like IH had seperate hydraulic systems, then did not have the capacity to do these things. Also, if the oil was to be constantly pumped around an external system, the oil overheated and damaged the seals etc. or jammed valves.
The wear in rear axles on Majors was due to redesign of the final drives during the time of the Supers. The gears were reduced in size and the gear tooth profile changed. Sometimes its best to leave things alone.
regards
Brian
