Pump timing

trying to find out how to time the simms fuel injector pump to engine. coupling broke, and was moved. tractor is 1956 fordson major diesel. If anyone knows how to ,it sure would be appreciated. thanks

Rick,
I take it that you have the pump removed and the coupling is now ready to be replaced.
Under the right hand side frame at the rear of the engine is a little plate held in place with a short bolt. Remove this and you will see the flywheel. Cut into the side of the sump is a notch.
Turn the fly wheel slowly until you see timing marks. At this time it is best to turn the flywheel by a screwdriver in the teeth as any other method is too fast for accurate setting. Set the timing at 23 degrees.
Now look at the injection pump drive coupling (engine end). The clamp bolt should be towards the bottom not over the top of the shaft. (The engine has to be fireing on number 1. If you have the valve cover removed number 4 valves must be "on the rock" inlet opening exhaust closing. Number 1 is about to fire). The position of the bolt on the coupling gives you this without having to remove the valve cover.
Fit the fibre coupling. Align the notch in the pump half of the drive with the notch on the indicator plate on the pump. The two halves should now slide together when you fit the pump.
Once the pump is re fitted check that the fibre drive is just tight. If it is loose, slaken the clamp bolt and slde the engine half of the drive towards the pump.
Bleed and start.
If the engine fails to start, you have got the pump on 180 degrees out. Remove pump and start again this time making sure that you are on number 1 cylinder fireing by checking clamp bolt position and/or valve as above.
