I just bought an E27N Fordson Major. Is there anyone one out there that might have some info on this tractor? I would be interested in having some feedback on wiring, carb settings, where I can get front tires, etc. Also, the clutch and brake are on opposite sides. Does this mean that this is an English tractor? What was the original color? As far as I can tell it is a dark green. Why are all the restored ones blue? I would appreciate any feedback anyone might have.

I own a 1951 fordson major e27n and need to know
how to work the controls mainly how to start it with the hand crank as the generator is hooped.
I am not sure where to set throttle and choke.
Do I use ether,where? the mech. advance ,where is retarded, where do you set for advance after it is running. I need any and all info that folks in the know can provide Thanks

Kelly, my uncle used to have two E27Ns: both had the P6 Perkins. One was a wheel tractor and the other was a crawler. I'd love to get some more info on these. Are there any websites that I could take a look at?

G`day out there? I left school in 1949 and drove the E27N fordson for a living on a UK farm for 4 yrs... the owner had three E27N fordsons 2 ran on Parrafin {power kerosene] the other had the P6 Perkins fitted... all three were fitted with 3 point linkage and a belt pulley.
Both Vapourising tractors were started on petrol then when hot you switched to what I now call kerosene.... Only hand crank was available.
To start cold.... drain out any kero from carby...turn petrol on... make sure gears are in neutral...move magneto lever into the stop position... close the choke... turn engine over a couple of times briskly...then move magneto lever into start or retarded notch... engage the crank handle so your hand grasps the handle with your thumb laying along the handle in the 6 oclock position and pull briskly up... When starting hot ...go through all above except dont use the choke... Normaly you are wasting your time trying to start using just kero.... These engines were always fouling sparkplugs... if you are using the tractor only for light work then just run on petrol... they run quite ok even with the petrol passing through the vapourizing tubes...
You should always switch over to petrol before stopping the engine. And they go best when continually boiling.... as a kid my job when threshing was to keep pouring water into the boiling radiators.... You advanced the spark depending on load and you adjusted the main jet for much the same reason.... all the tractors I remember then were bright dark blue with orange wheels...

Kelly,
You tractor was certainly built in England at Fords Dagenham Factory. As to the clutch being on the wrong side, up till 1952 it was always on that side even on the model "N".
The colour should be dark blue with orange rear and front wheels.
If you are looking for 6.00 x 19 tyres I think Mr. Miller a few posts back is the man to contact.

As a farmers son from the UK I remember driving a petrol/parafin Ford of the E27N series. The colour was dark blue with orange wheels and it cam in both tractor, half track (tracked rear wheels and rubber or steel fronts) and crawler. I would almost certainly be able to get tyres in the UK (probably second hand but maybe even new). I also know a few dealers who could provide spares. Drop me an E if you need any help.

I own two E27N's here in the UK.
One is a Petrol/TVO and the other is a Perkins L4 Diesel conversion.
Starting the Petrol one.
1. Drain the carb of old fuel (if you have a Petrol/TVo then this removes the TVO.
2. Open the petrol tap under the tank, check fule is flows into sight/sediment bowl (E27N's have only a tiny hole from the fuel tank and it does get clogged/restricted)
3. Set the Advance/Retard lever (if fitted) to full retard
4. Set the governor rod to 1/3rd out
5. Take hold of the starting handle with your right hand (thumb on the same side as your fingers).
6. Crank slowly and steadily - you should be hearing the impulse coupling on the magneto clicking as it throws over the mag.
7. Once started slowly advance the ignition and close the governor rod. The negine works best while hot so set the canvas screen so that it just boiling the water. watch the water level!
