Clutch problems (help Don!), Dexta ID

I think I have a '61 Fordson Dexta. The serial # is 957E23290. Does that confirm the year? This is my first tractor, which I've had for 5 years. It has been mostly problem free. The quirks are starting to add up now so I'll have to have work done soon. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I can handle simple jobs. The most pressing needs now are brakes and clutch. I have brakes on one side! On the left side, I tried adjusting the star wheel as outlined in the shop manual (FO-201) but when I put the tractor back down off the jacks and applied brakes there was only enough braking to barely slow the tractor. What's next to sort out this problem?
I think I have abused the clutch, but I'm still hoping it can be adjusted. I have used the tractor mostly for road maintenance on a 0.7 mile gravel road and for mowing. I did get involved in some tree removal that was probably abusive to the tractor. OK, I got carried away. I topped the trees at about 20 ft., looped a chain at the top and pulled the tree down by the leverage of the tree and it's remaining weight. If all goes smoothly the whole stump comes out. If it doesn't, some yanking or bumping is required. That's probably where the clutch took a beating I would guess. So, based on a response by Don to a previous posting, and info in my manual, I took a look at adjusting the clutch. I think from Don's comments that a previous owner must have adjusted by the wrong method. The pin in the clevis was at the rear position (seems from the manual that this position is for adjusting only???) The stop screw at the bottom of the release arm does not rest against the housing, so I couldn't see how that would adjust free play anymore. PTO clutch still works fine, but is very high for shifting gears. I'm not sure what is meant by free play, but there is very little "hold" left to it. You're either in gear and going or not. Where do I go with this???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding clutch on your Dexta. You have what is known as a live clutch if you have a two position clevis. In the front hole the clutch pedal only operates the transmission clutch. This allows you to stop the tractor without stopping the hydraulics which are driven from the pto shaft drive. If you operate the clutch in the second hole it stops both transmission and pto. You also get a perculiar right leg. Free play should be about 1/2 to 1" at pedal and can be adjusted on the clevis. Set the free play in the first hole in the clevis. When you get this right and the gears go in without grinding after holding the pedal down for three seconds, put the pin in the rear hole and see if the pto stops ok.Good luck.
