Brian, I have just looked at your tractor photo on this web page. What a sight. Is that a Ransomes plough? Was the two furrow common in your area? How does it perform with a three furrow? Do you compete with it?

A friend of mine has two very early E1ADKN Majors. One is a real bare bones tractor, no three point linkage and steel wheels. They are both restored to "concours de elegence".

Regards
Steven B

I`ve got an E27n I`ve just finished to pristine condition and have just obtained a R.S.&J 3furrow
plough. I am to restore it but may have to get points made for it. Not sure of age but prior to 1960 anyway. Plate says made for Fordson Major and seriel # is PM90330. Is complete with coulter discs but no coulters. Remarkable condition for not being used for perhaps over 35 years and left outside. Would love to get an e-mail of your E27n and plough. Regards from Western Australia

Steven,
The plough is a Ford plough built by Ransomes for the E27N around 1948 to 1950 before the Ford Ransomes tie up. It uses EPIC bodies. Yes I have used the pair in competitions but have not got very far. We have "Meets" such as the one at which the photo was taken, where about 40 of us get together on a field and plough. People come to see the old tractors at work and we raise money for the local hospital or charity. The sound of the Major is what people love to hear as she has a very crisp clear note. Sharper than the diesel. She also gets through exhaust pipes as, once up to temperature and pulling, the pipe and manifold glow red all the time. At night when working, about eight inches of flame show at the end of the pipe. You can see in the photo that the top part of the exhaust has burnt away. A new one was fitted shortly afterwards. Yes she will pull a three furrow. In fact I tried to buy a three furrow version of that plough but the man would not sell it. He prefered to cut it up for scrap.
My Major still works for a living. I us her to spray my potatoes and also keep my hand in with a bit of deep single furrow ploughing. That wakes up the neighbourhood! The EIADKN is very rare here. My old company used to fit them with Perkins L4 engines and export them. Sounds like your friend has got a great investment.
regards
Brian.
