The following was entered for a friend in need of independant second opinion. Fordson F engine knocking. All the following has been checked out: New valves, guides & lifters. New rings. Main & rod babbit in good shape. Crank in good shape. Rods & wrist pins fine. Crank & cam gears good. Crank pulley tight. New plugs & wires. Wiring correct. New timer and roller. When block was being dismanteled and without head, piston & rods, it had a strange clicking noise when rotating crank. Noise remained when enging reassembled at professional rebuilder with all new parts. Can loose some of knock with retarded timing. Engine idles and runs smooth but sounds like it is coming apart. Operating on hot internal mag and good coils. What's going on?

After reading your comments over and over I think that you might have excessive piston skirt clearance, retarding the ignition would affect the knock level. Were new pistons installed?
Was the ring groove removed from the top of the cylinder, I repaired a engine once, forgot about the groove and with new piston pins the pistons hit this grove and made a terrible clatter. I guess we all make mistakes and learn from them.

The cylinders were rehoned, new rings were installed. The original pistons were in good shape (no excessive play) so they were reused. Again at idle the engine sounds fine. As RPMS increase the knock that sometimes sound like rap gets louder. Please keep trying and ask around if you can. All help is greatly appreciated.
