I purchased a Dexta Diesel that hadn't run in 20 years. I was able to get it started after changing all of the filters and fluids. It seems to be running fairly well. My 3 point lift is very strong, however, it is eratic. It is either too little (low) or too much (high). My tractor appears to have a two stage clutch. I am not able to engage the pto with a mower attached and the engine running. I must first shut the tractor off, then engage the pto and restart the engine. When I depress the clutch all the way, the pto doesn't stop turning. Do you have any ideas on the trouble shooting of these problems. Don?

Louis: Use and wear of the Dexta tractor double disc clutch will result in loss of freeplay, or clutch pedal free movement. This is the movement of the pedal from the fully engaged position to the point when starting to depress the pedal that you feel clutch resistance in the pedal. This adjustment should be 3/4 inch. (measured at the foot pad of the pedal) Tractors should not be operated for long periods of time with no freeplay in the clutch adjustment as this will cause undue wear on the clutch surface itself as well as the clutch release bearing. Double clutches are adjusted differently than single clutches. If you look at the left side of the transmission housing you will find the clutch release arm attached to the shaft going into the transmission. Attached to the clutch release arm
is the clutch rod linkage and clevis. Single clutch freeplay is adjusted by removing the pin from the clevis and turning in or out. Adjusting the clevis on the double clutch WILL NOT alter your pedal freeplay. This is where many people mess up the double clutch equipped Dexta. Double clutch freeplay is adjusted with the set screw located at the bottom of the clutch release arm. Release the locknut on the stop screw and screw the set/stop screw IN to increase pedal freeplay.
Continue to adjust and test until you have a good
3/4 inch of freeplay. Then try your tractor with the engine running and see if you can shift and engage now that the clutch is not grabbing all the time. If this does not help.... I have one more procedure to try if the previous owner really had the clevis/rod linkage out of whack not knowing how to adjust double clutch freeplay.
Let me know what results from your initial effort to adjust your clutch.

If your tractor has live pto you must set the yoke on the front of the clutch linkage to its longest length. This raises the clutch pedal very high but allows the live pto feature to work.
