DOne mowing hay field, droped mower went about 20 feet and large clunking sound (making my heart jump in anticipation of cost to fix the noise) my question is this...did I drop a rod. The engine will now turn over but is not getting any diesel...the injector seems to not turn while cranking...does this mean the injector died or is it internal engine problem?

Thank you in advance for your expert advice.

Jeff: Turn the engine over and have someone watch the front of the injection pump where the drive coupling is located. If the engine is turning and the drive coupling is not you have either broken your camshaft, have a broken timing gear in the cluster under the aluminum timing gear cover at the front right of the engine or... both.
Once in a while only a section of a timing gear will break out, the injection pump drive coupling will turn intermittantly and of course timing will
go south in one revolution.

If the pump drive turns you may consider removing the valve cover and see if all four sets of valves are moving. If they are... the cam may
be ok and the "clunk" has come from somewhere else, such as dropping a rod, or breaking the crankshaft. If the valves are all functioning,
I guess I would go ahead and remove the head with
fingers crossed. If you have your hand crank, release the compression and turn it by hand instead of using the starter motor - most likely the major damage has been done, but if you use the handcrank you may prevent any further catastrophic damage.. ie, ramming a loose rod through the block. Hope this gives you a bit of
guidance to start the process of elimination.

FOund part at local store. DOes anything have to be timed after re-assembly? It looks like every thing pre-lines up ... no margin for error

thanks

Jeff: sorry, have been a bit busy in the field. There are two different widths of timing gears for the Fordson Major so be sure your replacement is the same width as the broken one. I would assume that you will have to re-time the engine to
the injection pump. That is a bit too involved to post here. There are timing marks visible on the flywheel from the little round access hole on the lower right hand side of the flywheel housing.
It is covered by a small round cover that slips over the hole. There are timing marks on the pump drive coupling and the pump housing. Everything has to be in time to get it to go properly. The procedure is involved and will best be accomplished with two people, one turning the engine by hand and one watching the timing marks. Let me know if you get to this point. There are,of course, timing marks on the gears themselves as you reassemble the cluster under the aluminum timing cover.

Yikes....couldn't find the peek hole on the fly wheel for timing. must be looking right at it but can not see it. Also as far as lining up the timing gears which lines should line up? I wish I could find a shop manual somewehre.

Don: Thanks for being such a great resource. I was able to get the broken gear out by slipping the cover and pulley out. The pulley will not clear the the frame in the front to remove completely. It looks like I'm going to have to remove the radiator and drop the front frame to remove the cover. Does this sound right to you?

Also, the timing gear I got is the same width but I do notice that the gear is thicker from bolt holes to gear edge. The actual gear surface width is the same. I'm hoping that this the correct gear so I'll not have to hunt another one down. I'm stating this to make sure I understand what you mean by thicker gear width.

Thanks again!

I checked per you instructions. It turns out that one of th gears in the front right that turn the injection pump broke around the three bolts that hold it in place. it was the one that connects to the gear that comes form the crank shaft.

Can I find a replacement part? Can it be welded?
your guidance is appreciated.
